Carolyn Bacher

Carolyn Bacher is a public relations consultant with the Department of Education and Training, promoting awareness of and participation in programs such as gifted and talented education, selective schooling, and apprenticeships and traineeships.

In 2006 she received the Public Relations Institute awards at both National and State level for consumer marketing for her campaign to market selective schooling at Perth Modern School.

The same year her campaign to market apprenticeships and traineeships won the state award for government sponsored campaigns and was highly commended at national level.

Carolyn’s background includes communications roles for the WA Electoral Commission through the State election of 2005, heading the public relations and media teams for the City of Perth and managing community relations for the City of Sydney in the lead up to the 2000 Olympics.

 

Geoff Kiel

Professor Geoff Kiel has had an extensive career as a management educator, academic researcher, management consultant and senior manager. He was till the end of June 2007 Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor and Dean of Business at the University of Notre Dame Australia. Prior to Notre Dame Australia, for many years he was Professor of Management at the University of Queensland and headed the Graduate School of Management at that university.

Professor Kiel is well-known for his work in both marketing and corporate governance. He has been one of the major presenters on director education throughout Australia for the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He has published over 100 research papers and numerous books including “Boards that Work” and “Board Director and CEO Evaluation”, both of which are published through McGraw Hill. He has also published three editions of a highly successful marketing textbook.

He was the founder and is Chairman of the Queensland based management consultancy Competitive Dynamics Pty Ltd (now known as Effective Governance Pty Ltd) which specializes in governance, strategy and marketing consulting for clients throughout Australia and internationally. He is a very experienced marketing consultant, having provided marketing consulting to well over 100 organisations. He is a director of several organisations and continues to provide top level advice to boards and senior managers.

 

Graham Boyd

Graham Boyd is Executive Manager, Retirement Living and Support Services for Churches of Christ Homes and Community Services in WA.

He is responsible for the management of all village operations (600 units and growing by 100 new villas per annum); the strategic maintenance framework for buildings with a replacement value of a quarter of a billion dollars; provision of Chaplaincy Services and involvement with appropriate models of care for the future aged care environment.

Graham was the former CEO for Sydney Legacy from 1997 to 2004, involved with several hundred volunteers, 20,000 widows, and multiple sites in both metropolitan Sydney and rural NSW. Prior to this Graham was Director, Review with the Insurance and Superannuation Commission based in Sydney; a senior officer with the Commonwealth Attorney General; and a Commissioned Officer in the Royal Australian Navy.

He is currently a member of the Executive, Churches of Christ WA; member of the WA committee for the Retirement Villages Association; Chairman of the finance committee for a school with several hundred students; holds an MBA from the Graduate School of Business, University of Sydney where he was awarded the Institute of Management Consultants in Australia medal for Outstanding Graduate; is a CPA; and a B.Com (Hons) degree from the UNSW

Graham has three young children, and maintains a large tank of Cichlid fish from Lake Malawi, Africa, which are watched with interest by his two cats.

 

Grant Dorrington

Qualifications & Position
Grant is currently Director of Football at the West Australian Football Commission. He is the also Independent Chairman of the Road Safety Council of Western Australia.

Experience
Since 1983, Grant has been involved in management roles that have required the ability to create a new image through innovative thinking, planning and marketing. These include:

  • The restructuring and marketing of the Education Department’s Aquatic programs;
  • Establishing football’s innovative junior management structure – the Football Development Trust;
  • Overseeing major changes to senior football at the West Australian Football Commission;
  • Assisting with the establishment of the Fremantle Football Club (Dockers) in its first two years within the AFL;
  • Overseeing the restructuring and transition of the WAFL as part of ensuring this competition’s future into the 21st Century;
  • Having been involved in all levels of the Australian Football industry, from league player, league coach, team manager to administrator, he has a ‘hands on’ background in sports management at every level.
  • From a teaching background, Grant is also a sought after public speaker in the areas of motivation, teamwork, self esteem and creative thinking. As an accredited Sports Administrator he is also a lecturer in Administration courses.


Career Highlights
In 1979 Grant Dorrington was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) as part of the Queen’s New Year Honours list with the following citation “in recognition of outstanding efforts in the planning, organisation and marketing of Western Australia 150th Anniversary Celebrations 1979” .

In 1983 he co-ordinated the Western Australian Governments ‘Welcome Home Celebrations’ for the victorious America’s Cup Australia II crew. Grant consulted with the owner of the Perth Glory on the planning and establishment of that team. Grant also established a Management Consultancy business specialising in assisting sporting and corporate organisations achieving their goals through planning and creative thinking.

Carolyn Hall

Carolyn Hall’s 17 years of professional experience in marketing range over a wide diversity of business sectors and disciplines. Since moving back to Perth, Western Australia in 2006 after living abroad for nearly 20 years, she took up the position of Brand and Communications Director for the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia, one of the states most respected and iconic brands.

Before this she served as Senior Vice President for the McCann World Group, the largest marketing communications organisation in the world. Based in New York, she led a global team in the development of cutting edge marketing solutions that harnessed a broad spectrum of communication, planning and strategic technologies.

In the process, she worked directly with numerous Fortune 500 business leaders to translate their business strategies into effective, executable marketing programs. Her previous experience also extends to the financial industry, where she held a number of key management positions at firms including Citibank, Mellon Bank and Bankers Trust. Based in London, these positions encompassed the supervision of virtually every aspect of marketing communications, including brand management, product development and pricing, account planning, advertising, public relations and customer relationship management.

In the course of her career, Carolyn has worked with many corporations including L'Oreal, Nikon, Intel, Microsoft, Exxon, UPS, General Motors, Coca-Cola, MasterCard and Johnson & Johnson.

 

Debra Shorter

Debra Shorter is the General Manager for Business Development and Marketing at LandCorp, the Western Australian government’s property developer. LandCorp has more than 200 diverse projects across WA, ranging from large industrial developments, urban renewal, tourism-linked projects, transit-oriented developments to small residential and light industrial developments helping smaller country towns develop and grow. LandCorp has around a billion dollars in assets and an annual turnover in excess of $220million. Debra provides strategic leadership for a dedicated, professional team identifying and assessing new business opportunities, driving the latest sustainable design initiatives for LandCorp plus managing its integrated marketing and communications.

 

Jerry Lee Jones

Jerry Lee Jones is the Administration/Operations Manager for iLMS Live. He has over 15 years experience in using and providing end user IT solutions in the small to medium business environment. Jerry Lee was instrumental in establishing the international collaboration team to develop this Voice over Internet (VOIP) product that delivers live web based communications and training facilities and creates numerous opportunities for online delivery of live sales presentations and instant customer service.

In this presentation Jerry Lee will provide a brief overview of VOIP technology and live demonstrations of iLMS Live applications with a focus on sales and customer service applications. For those with a view to the future of customer service this is a session not to miss.

 

Patrick Walker

Commissioner and Executive Director for Consumer Protection Department of Consumer and Employment Protection (WA)

Patrick Walker commenced his current position as Commissioner for Consumer Protection and Prices Commissioner in June 1998. Prior to this, he had extensive management experience in local government, with his most recent position as Chief Executive Officer at the City of Subiaco (1993 to 1998). In addition to performing the role of Executive Director, Consumer Protection, Patrick is also a member of the Legal Aid Commission of Western Australia, the Medical Board of Western Australia, a Trustee of the national Travel Compensation Fund and Deputy Chairman of Workpower Incorporated, which provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

 

Randall Griggs

Randall initially joined Colmar Brunton as a graduate in 2001 and was involved in churn tracking for Telstra.

In 2002, he was seconded to Telstra to help manage their market research program. This has given Randall appreciation of the full scope of issues facing marketing managers, and how research can be best structured to make it as actionable as possible.

Following his secondment at Telstra, Randall was employed at Research International, London, where he worked solely for their second largest client Vodafone. His role was to implement and manage the global consumer and small to medium business customer satisfaction program. This was a significant piece of research given the complexity inherently involved with implementing any new tracking study, and due to the massive scale on which it was conducted.

Randall rejoined the Colmar Brunton Brisbane team in 2005 as a Senior Project Manager. Since this appointment, he has been promoted to State Manager WA and has relocated to the Perth office.

Randall enjoys playing cricket and soccer, and is a member of MENSA.

He has completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Business in Economics.

 

Roger James

Roger James is National President of the Australian Marketing Institute.

He is a marketer and market researcher, and is the Director of Roger James & Associates a research and communications consultancy. He is a Certified Practising Marketer, a Qualified Practising Market Researcher and is a qualified psychologist.

Prior to establishing his own firm he had senior management experience in both the public and private sectors. His professional experience covers research in a wide range of fields, business planning and development, marketing strategy development and communications analysis.

Having a background in research, Roger is particularly interested in the measurement of performance in marketing, and he has been closely involved in the AMI's Australian Marketing Metrics Project.

 

Charlie Nelson

Charlie Nelson has a B.Sc. degree majoring in statistics and has worked in the market research and forecasting fields for over 30 years. His work has involved:

Opportunity identification and evaluation through market segmentation and the analysis of consumer perceptions and preferences.

Developing models which forecast demand or market share under a range of market environment and marketing-mix scenarios.

Developing models which assist in new product or policy design using simulated choice experiments.

He has extensive consulting experience in the telecommunications, retail trade, food, media, motor vehicle, and finance industries.

He has been a leader in the application of conjoint analysis and choice modelling in Australia. He has applied these techniques to problems in a wide range of industries including consumer packaged goods; financial services; telecommunications services; transport services; motor vehicles; and public policy. In 1987, he received the Market Research Society of Australia Award of Merit for a paper on the application of choice modelling to new product design and he is a co-author of a 2005 Marketing Science paper on an application to competition in the telecommunications industry ('A prelaunch diffusion model for evaluating market defense strategies' by John H. Roberts, Charles J. Nelson, and Pamela D. Morrison; Marketing Science, Winter 2005).

 

 

Lisa Norris

Lisa oversees Australia and New Zealand operations and is responsible for a network of six offices and more than 70 staff. Aquent’s focus is providing superior recruitment services to its clients through placement of marketing, advertising, creative, communications, and business support professionals.

Lisa has been in the recruitment industry for 15 years, and prior to working for Aquent, worked for Spherion, one of the world’s largest publicly listed recruitment companies. Lisa managed its New South Wales operations, focusing on the placement of information technology, call centre and business support professionals. The company was acquired in late 2005 and renamed Verossity and post-acquisition, Lisa was named the head of the Australia operations, responsible for six offices and more than 75 staff.

Lisa started her recruitment career in 1991, joining Andersen Contracting, now Diversiti, part of the Chandler Macleod Group. In the five years she was with Andersen, she successfully developed its government client base to the point where it contributed more than 30 percent of the total Andersen Consulting Group’s Australian revenues. At the time she left, she was responsible, in addition to the government practice, for its products, financial services, and utilities recruitment practices with a team of 20 staff.

Moving to London after being approached by Robert Walters to open an IT division, she built its fledging business from two staff to more than 75 IT recruiters in a three-year period and was key to the company’s strategy to publicly list. Upon returning to Australia, Lisa joined Andrews Partners, later known as Sapphire Technologies, where her role was Australian head as well as general manager sales. In this role, she was responsible for all operations and client relations.

Lisa is active in the recruitment industry, having sat on numerous industry boards as well as government and private industry task forces. She has been a speaker at many international staffing and recruitment conferences in Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe.

 

Ken Roberts

Ken is the Managing Principal of Forethought Research and is a specialist in services marketing research relating to acquisition, retention, brand and communications. Ken is also one of Australia’s leading researchers in the areas of Customer Value Analysis and brand. Over his career, Ken has led hundreds of complex research projects for some of Australia’s best regarded corporations, both within a Business-to-Consumer and Business-to-Business context. Ken is committed to conducting research that produces unique insight, actionable recommendations and tangible results. As such, Ken involves himself at both a tactical and strategic level, working closely with clients to see research findings become embedded in their business strategies.

Ken is the Chairman of the Advisory Board at Monash University Department of Marketing and for the past five years has been an Associate Professor in Marketing Research at Melbourne Business School. Ken has presented at numerous industry conferences, including the AMSRS conference on three occasions and most recently the American Marketing Association’s 2006 Frontiers in Services Conference, where he along with Professor Peter Danaher, presented research into the effectiveness of marketing communications channels. Prior to academia and consulting, Ken spent fifteen years in industry, in the role of Head of Marketing for a major law firm. Ken is Qualified Practising Market Researcher and member of the Australia Marketing and Social Research Society.

 

Dr Simone Pettigrew

Dr Simone Pettigrew is affiliated with the UWA Business School. She is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Research for Consumers and her research focus is vulnerable groups of consumers such as seniors and children. Simone has published widely in the area of marketing to seniors, particularly in relation to the health, retail, and financial services industries.

She has provided consulting services to agencies such as the Positive Ageing Foundation of Australia that seek to promote the welfare of older Australians in their marketplace interactions.

 

Troy Pickard

Mayor of the City of Joondalup

In his profession, Troy Pickard specialises in distribution management and brand strategy - most recently working as a Senior Project Director for national consultancy firm The Right Group, working for companies such as Hanson, Bunnings, State West, Blokpave and Timbercorp.

Troy has worked in a variety of marketing roles including Regional Marketing Co-ordinator for Metso Minerals Asia Pacific and later promoted Area Sales Manager for South Asia, Export Marketer for Aqua Technics and National Marketing Manager for Ron Mack Machinery.

In May 2006, Troy Pickard was successfully elected Mayor of the City of Joondalup, a position he will occupy on a full-time basis until the end of his term in 2009.

He has received numerous decorations and awards, including a Distinguished Service Award from the Western Australian Local Government Association in 2005, a 40 Under 40 Award in 2002 and in 2007, a Certificate for Outstanding Achievement at the Young Australian of the Year Awards in 1998, Runner-up for the BRW National Marketing Student of the Year Award in 1996 and Tasmanian Young Achiever of the Year Award in Community Service in 1990.

Troy is a Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute, a Certified Practising Marketer and WA Vice-President for the Australian Marketing Institution.

 

Gary Roberts

Gary Roberts started his radio career over 30 years ago at 3AW in Melbourne. He spent nine years on air with a number of stations including 5AD Adelaide, 2UW Sydney and 6KY Perth before moving into Programming. As a Programme Director, he programmed four stations to No 1 in their respective markets including a record run of 34 consecutive No 1 surveys with 96FM in Perth, which he launched in 1980. He was General Manager of 96FM from 1984 to 1992 when he left to take over the same role at 94·5FM in Perth.

Gary and his team quickly transformed 94·5FM (now MIX 94·5) from a poor No 5 to a strong No 2 in the Perth marketplace, and ultimately No 1. In August 1993, 94·5FM purchased PMFM (now 92.9) from Kerry Packer, and Gary Roberts was appointed Managing Director of both stations. Under his guidance, 92.9 and MIX 94·5 dominated the Perth radio market being the No 1 and No 2 stations while Gary was at the helm.

In 1997 Austereo purchased 92.9 and MIX 94·5 for $100,000,000 and Gary Roberts remained as Managing Director.

Gary was a Director of the peak radio industry body for eight years, including 3 years as Chairman of Commercial Radio Australia. This is the industry association for commercial radio representing the interests of 235 member stations nationally, including the major networks of Austereo, Australian Radio Network, DMG and Southern Cross.

In 2002, Gary resigned as Managing Director of Austereo Perth and after a brief holiday in Italy, accepted his current role of Managing Director of Perth's first new commercial FM radio station in 22 years, Nova 93.7.

Nova 93.7 was launched on December 5, 2002 and in its first full year, was No 1 with 18-34 year olds.

After four years on air, Nova 93.7 has more 18-39 year old listeners than any other Perth radio station and is No 1 Under 40.

The launch of the Nova Network across Australia, has been one of the most successful brand launched in Australian radio history and Nova is the most listened to Under 40 brand in Australian radio.

 

Ms Wavne Rikkers

Wavne is the Director of Client Services in the WA office of the ABS. She has worked for the ABS since 1981 and her first job at the ABS was as the Ethnic and Outback Liaison Officer for the 1981 Census. Since that time she has worked in a wide variety of roles which have included designing about 200 surveys for state government, compiling price indexes and finance statistics, running an economic statistics unit and working in client liaison.

She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from UWA which included an eclectic mix of languages, psychology and statistics. Prior to joining the ABS she also worked overseas in the clinical research area of a large pharmaceutical company, so she has a good appreciation of marketing from a private sector perspective. She is very experienced in census data, having participated in six censuses, and can provide some useful insights into how important it can be in targeting your market properly.

 

Dr. Steven Ward

Steve is a senior lecturer in marketing at Murdoch University. He has published 40 refereed papers in leading international journals (including the The European Journal of Marketing, International Marketing Review, Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice and Applied Economics) books, and conferences. Steve has also worked as a market research consultant for blue-chip companies such as Pacific-Dunlop, ANZ, Challenge Bank, BHP, Telstra, and Ford, and worked as a consultant for Focused Management with a number of small business start-ups as part of the COMET and AusIndustry schemes.

Steve is currently Higher Education representative of the West Australian division of the Australian Market and Social Research Society. His research interests include the effect of country-of-origin information on consumer judgements and choice; the development of consumer knowledge by children; consumer durable purchasing behaviour; service quality; marketing strategy and the environment; diffusion of innovations; marketing of pharmaceuticals and body image; global branding; wine marketing; and privacy research.

He is a father of Generation Y and Z children and teaches many Gen Y adults at university.
Steve is the lead author of Zikmund, William, Ward, Steven, Lowe, Ben and Winzar, Hume (2007) Marketing Research Asia Pacific Edition, 1st Edition, Thomson Learning, Melbourne, Australia.

The New Generation Gap:
How Baby Boomers should market to Gen X and Y.

Gen X and Y are two important age groups for Marketers to consider, who account for 8.2 million consumers in the Australain market  but why are they so different?  and how can you market to age groups that don't want to be marketed to?  This presentation will provide an overview of the consumer behaviour of both groups, how they use media differently from the rest of the population, and some successful case studies of marketing to these diverse but yet important market segments.
